Juveniles is a piece representing the meaning of youth. It takes elements from sitcom culture by using an iconic couch and large set of friends, posing for the cameras.
Inspiration
Friends, High school, Friend Groups, School, Teenagers, Iconic, Stereotypes, Time, Growth, Sitcoms, Labels.
For my choice piece I wanted to create something personal, yet relatable. I wanted to include some of the most important influences in my life. My second family. I wanted to recreate a scene with them using sitcom culture and a classic painting, both capturing a group enjoying themselves in the moment. The Luncheon of the Boating Party depicts a group enjoying a lunch together. The restaurant, Maison Fournaise was popular place to visit to get away from the city. |
Planning Sketches
Our photos were made up on the spot, I had my friends come over to brainstorm.
I wanted the photos to look natural, so I told my friends to sit whichever way they want. Body language plays a big part in person's personality. You can tell a lot from how a person sits and presents themselves. Like if they spread their legs or keep their arms close to their body. I just thought it would look best to let them do their own thing. |

Experimentation
The first case of experimentation was in our photoshoot. Back to what I said earlier, I wanted for my friends/models to sit in whichever way they found most comfortable. After taking a couple poses, I'd ask them to switch seats, we had three different sets of poses. Since a couple of my friends are camera shy, distracting them with random phrases made them loosen up, and we had many laughing fits. Thanks to that I got some good smiles.
Another part I wanted to try out was coloring in my lineart digitally, I instead decided to digitally manipulate the background and keep the watercolor, it was a good contrast between organic artwork and digital work. |
