Ecocentrismo
1980 x 2640 px
December 2020 Digital Painting Ecocentrismo is a painting describing the meaning of having an ecocentric mindset. It's a point of view that recognizes the ecosphere, rather than the biosphere, as central in importance. Jason Mraz's song "Only Human" and Remedios Varo's "La Creación De Las Aves" also have great symbolism towards our own creation and what factors out birth.

Inspiration
One of the main inspirations to this piece is the song, "Only Human" has to do with the Earth and how we are as people. Specifically this lyric, "Only human Made of flesh, made of sand, made of you and me The planet's talking about a revolution The natural laws ain't got no constitution They've got a right to live their own life But we keep paving over paradise..." The Woman is using herself as a tool, in order to create her paintings. There are many sources of the Owl Woman’s work. One is the heavens, the glass is using the light from up above to bring the paintings of birds to life. Another is her heart, a violin hangs around her neck, the strings connect to the hand she uses to paint with. This symbolism can be translated to having to use your surroundings in order to make something of yourself. The bird figure is using elements of the outside and of herself to create.

Planning Sketches
One of the first things I had to do was create reference photos of myself to see what kind of emotion I wanted to show for my piece. Out of all the pictures I took I felt more inclined to use the third picture simply because of my eyes. In my artwork I like having the focus on the eyes since I feel as if you can tell everything about the figure's emotions and thoughts through their eyes. In the third picture my eyes are much wider in comparison of the other two pictures. |
Process
1. Once I picked my reference photo I started blocking in large shapes of color by using the eyedrop tool to pick the exact color I needed. 2. The main brush that I use in MediBang is a Wet Watercolor brush that stays at an opacity of 10% so that my layers blend a lot smoother. The reason why I use this brush is because of how soft the finished outcome looks. 3. Once everything was colored in I added orange and red toned overlays to make my colored piece more vibrant. |
Experimentation
Next was to take apart my face and make it as if it were coming apart. I took chunks off of the top of my head and my left/right cheeks. Once those pieces were cut off and pasted slightly to the side, I then add some clouds, rocks and greens, (cut from pictures I've taken from my backyard) so that those elements would look as if they were coming out from my head.
Reflection
When it comes to drawing and painting myself I often have trouble since I tend to over exaggerate features of my face to the point were it doesn't look like me. So by pinpointing exactly were the light and shadows were on my face helped to put together what I actually look like. Once I start to paint myself more I feel like taking this way of painting will definitely help me again.
